Every other art form a child meets works with reflected light. Paint, crayon, collage and clay all depend on a lamp or a window bouncing light off the surface towards the eye. Stained glass, lanterns and peg boards belong to a much smaller family in which the light travels through the work, and the difference is not decorative but structural.
Transmitted light behaves differently
A pane of coloured glass filters the light passing through it, so its colour changes with the weather, the time of day and what is behind it. A translucent peg does the same job with a fixed source behind it, which makes it more predictable and far less atmospheric. Both share the quality that makes stained glass memorable: the colour appears to come from inside the object.
What children notice first
Take a child to a church window or a shop lit by coloured panels and the reaction is usually about intensity, not subject matter. That is worth naming, because it is the same reaction they have to their own glowing picture. The step from one to the other is short, and a cathedral window suddenly becomes something they have made a small version of.
Cheap ways to work in transmitted light
Tissue paper glued between two sheets of clear film and taped to a window is the classic school version, and it still works. Coloured acetate offcuts, a torch under a glass table, and a lantern made from a jar all teach the same lesson for almost nothing. A peg board is the tidy, repeatable end of this family, and Lite-Brite gives a sense of the current boards if you want the version that does not involve glue.
The vocabulary that transfers
- Leading: the dark lines between colours, which on a peg board is simply the black sheet showing through.
- Saturation: how deep a colour reads when lit from behind rather than in front.
- Halation: the soft bleed a bright colour throws into its darker neighbour.
- Field and accent: a large calm area of one colour with a small intense passage inside it.
Why gaps matter as much as pegs
In a leaded window the black lines do half the drawing, holding the shapes apart so the colours do not merge into soup. The unfilled holes on a board play exactly that role. Children who fill every hole out of thoroughness usually produce their weakest pictures, and the fix is to ask them to remove twenty pegs rather than add any.
Where the comparison flatters the toy
Glass has depth, texture and imperfection that plastic simply does not, and daylight through a real window changes hour by hour in a way a fixed lamp never will. A peg picture is a bright, cheerful thing; it is not a substitute for the real medium. Framing it as an introduction rather than an equivalent keeps everyone honest.
